Privacy highlights from Google I/O 2025

Fresh off the wave of innovation from Google I/O, we're excited to share the latest Privacy Sandbox developments. We put a spotlight on two key areas for developers: our progress on the Web APIs and the SDK Runtime on Android.

Check out our session on Identity, payments, and embeds without third-party cookies.

In this session, we're talking about why both user experience and privacy are important, and how to offer both. We dive into the difference between third-party and first-party cookies, walk through user journeys that may rely on third-party cookies, and discuss the new alternative APIs that can help you implement these user journeys without relying on third-party cookies.

We also recommend checking out the Reshaping user authentication and identity verification session. Alongside other identity technologies, it highlights new features and advantages of FedCM, a privacy-centric approach to federated identity.

We also showcased privacy-enhancing APIs on Android, such as the SDK Runtime, which allows for isolating third-party code in a dedicated runtime environment. Additionally, SDK Runtime can shield apps from SDK-caused ANRs and crashes, and deduplicate shared libraries common to multiple apps. Complete our new learning pathway: Build privacy-first Android SDKs with the SDK Runtime and you can even earn a badge for your developer profile.

Upcoming I/O Connect events

We valued the opportunity to connect with developers at Google I/O, answer questions, and hear your feedback. Looking ahead, we will also be at the upcoming I/O Connect events in Berlin, Bengaluru, and Shanghai. Find us at our in-person "Privacy solutions for the web" panel discussion, visit the "Privacy - PSAT Demo" and "Identity and authentication" demo booths, or stop by the Web or Android Q&A stations. We look forward to continuing the conversation there.
